Top Tips for Interviewing from Home!

Link Blog | September 2, 2020

The recent pandemic has drastically changed the process of interviewing, hiring, and on boarding new recruits. If you are a candidate for a position or just starting your search, you can increase your chances of success by preparing specifically for a remote interview.

Check out our Video, where Cormac Spencer discusses ‘Top Tips for Succeeding At Video Interviews’.

Additional Tips:

  • To start off, suggest multiple ways to meet. The team may already have a preferred method, but when you provide several options, it shows that you’re proactive.
  • Always prepare your space: your interview will almost definitely be via video call. Take a few minutes to prepare your space. Where will you sit? How close will your face be to the camera? Is there a lot of background noise? Turn your camera so that you can position your chair and frame your face. If you’re on a laptop, prop it up a few inches, check the lighting so you are not back lit. Also, tidy up the space behind you and silence any notifications.
  • Appearance still matters!! Follow all the same advice you would for a traditional interview in terms of showing up early and dressing appropriately.
  • Lastly, 10 to 15 minutes before the call, open the app you will use to make sure it doesn’t need to be updated. Then do a test run to ensure everything looks and sounds correct. Are you close enough to your WiFi router? How does your mic sound?

To sum it all up, Preparation is Key!
