Senior Buyer – Medical Device

Our client, a leading medical device manufacturer requires a Senior Technical Buyer with a technical \ engineering background to join their team. The role will work with internal and external actors (suppliers) to ensure that high quality standards and cost competitiveness are maintained.
We are looking for an Engineer who can combine Technical ability with a Commercial mind-set and strong supplier relationship management skills and / or a procurement professional with a background in medical devices or electromechanical component procurement.

The role will have responsibility for driving and reporting on the Dublin Site Productivity Program. Working with Site Operations, Technical functions, and Strategic Procurement to achieve business Productivity targets, while maintaining a strong pipeline of cost reduction projects. A key focus is to ensure that the Dublin supply base is aligned commodity roadmaps.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing supplier management programs, such as; supplier evaluation and approval, commodity gap analysis, capacity and technical capability assessments, risk assessment and mitigation plan management, design-to-cost exercises, part/technology/supplier decisions, RfQ and Supplier Selection, part re-sourcing/transfers and overall supplier development/optimisation projects.
  • Lead the Site Productivity Program and develop a competent leadership role in this area of expertise.
  • Continue to develop and advance the Internal Productivity Program with regards to Procurement cost reduction initiatives to achieve business targets. Chair review meetings and monitor progress against key targets and publish management reports, up to senior management level, to ensure success.
  • Continuously drive material cost reductions through collaboration with Strategic Procurement and Technical functions.
  • Participate in cost negotiations and value engineering initiatives with suppliers to jointly reduce total material costs.
  • Act as the site interface with the Productivity process. Responsibilities to include; progress reporting, accurate data alignment with the reporting structure and ensuring that the site Productivity processes are maintained in compliance with the Corporate requirements and standards. Develop, control, and create reports on all financial data regarding productivity for both Procurement and Site Operations.
  • Working with Commodity Management to identify and implement supplier changes in the supply base to reduce costs, improve performance and optimise part/supplier sourcing alignment.
  • Implement integrated Supplier strategies into the Dublin site, based on Commodity roadmaps, to provide suppliers capable of servicing business needs across all stakeholder areas (Technical, Commercial, Quality and Financial), closing any supplier gaps.
  • Support NPI and design change activities in terms of part design/manufacturing technology/supplier selection decisions to ensure part/supplier optimisation.
  • Conduct and analyse RfQ competitive exercises to identify lowest ‘total cost of ownership’ (TCoO) sources. Promote the adoption of Cost Value Engineering model with major spend suppliers.
  • Initiate Supply Agreements and NDA’s where required to protect the companies’ interests. Prepare for negotiations and work closely with Commodity Management.
  • Promote the use of supplier innovation into product design and improvements. Lead Design-to-Cost and Value Engineering exercises with suppliers and Engineering to drive cost reductions.
  • Initiate and project-manage major part resourcing activities in a structured and controlled manner, assuring continuity of supply.
  • Identify supplier risk situations and work with site functions and Strategic.
  • Procurement to develop and implement risk mitigations strategies.
  • Manage the site-level supplier risk program responsibilities.
  • Understand stakeholder requirements for current and future Product programmes to assess capability gaps in the supply base.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic and operational performance of the Dublin supply base by leading and contributing on various projects

Competencies/Skills

  • Broad based understanding of various manufacturing technologies – Electronic and/or Electrical an advantage.
  • Experience with Plastics, PCBA, Metal Machine/Fabrication, Optics, Fluidics, Pneumatics and Cables.
  • Ability to work with Engineering and NPD to optimise part, materials, technology, manufacturing process and supplier decisions.
  • Strong Project Management skills and the ability to initiate and lead part/supplier optimisation projects on a cross-functional basis through to completion
    • Experience of managing major parts resourcing and new supplier/part start-up programs in a structured, controlled and risk-managed way essential.
  • Ability to interact with and influence supplier selection decisions at Site and Strategic Procurement levels within an organisation. Experience of implementing Commodity strategies.
  • Strong problem solving, planning and analytical skills. Ability to collate and analyse large amounts of data for key decision making.
  • Excellent oral communications, business writing skills, inter-personal and presentation skills. Ability to conduct and lead meetings effectively.
  • Dynamic team player that can lead effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related Science discipline.
  • Consideration will also be given to individuals with a Business, Procurement or Supply Chain degree with extensive relevant Technical experience.
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience within a Procurement function, preferably in an electro-mechanical manufacturing environment. Manufacturing engineering experience an advantage.
  • Broad-based commodity experience – suppliers, materials, technology and manufacturing processes, across a range of commodities a key requirement.
  • Experience of working within a direct-material Commodity Management environment across a range of supplier management topics. Proven record of influencing and shaping the strategic development of a supply base.
  • Experience of dealing with a broad range of supplier organisations across Asia, Europe and the USA desirable.
  • Must have an established commercial mind-set and the ability to assess and conclude business agreements with suppliers.
  • Must have experience of operating as part of a site cross-functional team, managing stakeholder relationships and reporting up to management level.
