Head of Learning & Development

Our client, a top tier law firm located in Dublin 2 have a vacancy for the Head of their Learning & Development team. The role is responsible for developing and implementing a Learning & Development Strategy in line with the firm’s strategic objectives. This involves working with all relevant people (partners, lawyers, and business services personnel) to identify and prioritise firm-wide, department, practice group and individual career development needs for all roles within the firm.

Salary: €90k-€100k

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partnering with the firm’s Management Committee, Managing Partner, Practice Group Leaders, Trainee Steering Group, People Partners and the Executive Committee to develop learning and development strategy and annual development programmes linked to organisational strategic objectives.
  • Partnering with the Managing Partner, Trainee Steering Group and Executive Committee to develop career development plans for lawyers and other personnel, and integrate this into the appraisal process.
  • Partnering with the Managing Partner, the Management Committee, Practice Group Leaders and others to establish individual and collective leadership and development needs for partners, including external coaching provision where required and agreed.
  • Partnering with the Professional Support Lawyers (PSLs) to determine the best approaches to developing lawyers’ technical skills at relevant levels of PQE.
  • Partnering with Practice Group Leaders to maintain supportive environment for newly qualified lawyers, including designing a development plan, including mentoring or other suitably agreed provision where required.
  • Partnering with the Trainee Steering Group to ensure that an appropriate learning and development culture is in place for all trainees.
  • Leading relevant learning and development strategic projects and initiatives as required.
  • Contributing to the development of the firm’s performance management processes.
  • Resourcing the learning and development plan through internal or external providers.
  • Managing the knowledge and library information services.
  • Managing the L&D team.
  • Managing L&D and knowledge systems.
  • Managing the learning and development budget.
  • Developing the roll out of training and knowledge to clients.


Qualifications, Experience and Characteristics:

  • Qualified solicitor.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ post qualification experience in a leading commercial law firm.
  • L&D qualification or membership of a professional body such as IITD or CIPD.
  • Strong understanding of business requirements and the operational realities of a commercial law firm.
  • Highly motivated self-starter. Pragmatic, solutions focused, can-do attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to lead, persuade, influence and effect change across the business to all relevant partners and their teams and across business services.
  • Enquiring mind – able to challenge constructively and suggest improvements to established practices.
  • Strong facilitation, consulting and coaching skills.
  • Design and delivery skills, including the development of technology-driven L&D solutions.
  • Experience of developing and implementing partner development strategies and programmes, including the use of coaching, psychometrics and 360 degree feedback.
  • Experience of developing and implementing commercial skills and career development programmes for solicitors.
  • Experience of developing knowledge management strategies.
  • Experience of delivering training and knowledge to clients.
